King County Water Taxi Wrap

Seattle Fleet Branding: Wrapping the King County Water Taxi for the FIFA World Cup

With the FIFA World Cup coming to Seattle, the entire Puget Sound region is preparing for a massive wave of international tourism and traffic. Local transit systems are working around the clock to handle the influx, and Sir Graphic was called in to execute one of the highest-profile commercial graphics projects on the Seattle waterfront: a complete cosmetic refresh of the King County Water Taxi, the MV Doc Maynard.

If you’ve been down by Pier 50 or the Seattle waterfront lately, you’ve probably seen her gleaming out on Elliott Bay.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how our team pulled off this massive marine vinyl wrap under a razor-thin deadline, ensuring it looks flawless for the world stage.

The Challenge: High-Durability Marine Fleet Graphics

Wrapping a standard commercial van or truck fleet is one thing. Installing a heavy-duty vinyl wrap on a 104-foot high-speed catamaran that lives constantly in harsh saltwater environments is a completely different beast.

The Doc Maynard is a vital workhorse for King County Metro, hauling thousands of passengers daily between West Seattle and downtown. With the city launching expanded waterfront shuttle routes to transport soccer fans directly toward Seattle Stadium, there was zero room for error. The wrap had to look elite, meet strict transit authority guidelines, and withstand the elements without disrupting daily commuter schedules.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
• Client: King County Metro / Water Taxi Fleet
• Vessel: MV Doc Maynard (104-foot Catamaran)
• Materials: Premium, marine-grade cast vinyl with UV-protective laminate
• Use Case: Fleet branding & high-visibility transit advertising
• Location: Seattle Waterfront / Elliott Bay

Step 1: In-House Production & Material Selection

A marine vehicle wrap lives or dies by the preparation and the materials used. For a commercial vessel crossing the Puget Sound daily, standard vinyl just won’t cut it.

Our production team utilized a premium, marine-grade cast vinyl paired with a heavy-duty, UV-resistant protective laminate. This specific material combination is engineered to survive:

  • Constant exposure to aggressive salt spray and marine humidity.
  • Severe sun exposure and UV fading.
  • Intense physical friction from docking bumpers and tides.

Every panel was printed, checked, and meticulously finished in-house at our facility, ensuring absolute color accuracy and graphic alignment before the panels ever reached the water.

Step 2: Precision Marine Vinyl Installation

Outdoor marine installations require intense focus and flawless technique. Our certified installation crew hit the docks armed with specialized, non-abrasive cleaning agents to completely strip away invisible salt crust, scum lines, and old adhesive residue.

Working on scaffolding directly over the water means you have to get it right the first time. Our team laid down the panels seamlessly, flawlessly stretching and manipulating the vinyl over the catamaran’s complex contours, rivets, and water-retaining seams.

How to Make a Marine Wrap Last: When wrapping watercraft, sealing the edges is the most critical step. Our installers treated every single edge, seam, and overlapping joint with specialized optical edge sealer. This prevents water from forcing its way under the vinyl when the catamaran is cruising at top speeds across the bay.

Ready for the World Stage

The Doc Maynard is officially back in service, looking incredibly sharp, vibrant, and ready to welcome soccer fans from all over the globe.
