Safety Meets Style: Behind the Design of Thurston County’s New Medic 1 Units

There is something special about a project where form and function don’t just meet—they shake hands and get to work. We recently wrapped up a collaborative design and print project for Thurston County Medic 1, and the results are, quite literally, brilliant.

When you’re designing for emergency vehicles, the stakes are high. These units need to be unmistakable in broad daylight and impossible to miss at 2:00 AM. Working closely with the Medic 1 team, we set out to create a look that honored their professional identity while pushing the boundaries of visibility technology.

The Secret Sauce: 3M™ IJ780mc Reflective

To pull this off, we turned to the “gold standard” of wrap films: 3M™ IJ780mc Reflective.

Usually, reflective vinyl is a bit of a diva—it’s thick and stiff. But the IJ780 is different. It allowed us to achieve a seamless, high-performance look:

  • Color-Matched Reflection: We didn’t just slap white reflective tape on the back. We printed the specific red Medic 1 vehicle color directly onto the reflective base. This means during the day, the branding looks sleek and integrated.
  • The Black and Gold Standard: We designed the iconic stripes in a high-contrast black and gold. By printing these on the 3M reflective substrate, the gold pops with a metallic brilliance.

A Collaborative Process

This wasn’t a “drop-off the keys and wait” kind of job. The Thurston County Medic 1 team was involved in the design iterations from day one. We worked together to ensure the final product—from the “Paramedic Unit” side markings to the “Medic One” cab branding—looked like an official, elite piece of life-saving equipment.

“Visibility isn’t just about being seen; it’s about being recognized instantly. By using full-print reflective technology, we’ve eliminated the ‘patchwork’ look of old-school decals.”

Why This Matters

On a rainy Northwest night, every second counts. By ensuring that the entire design—including the rear chevron “Medic Unit” stripes and the “Thurston County” identification—is reflective, we’re helping keep the Medic 1 crews safe while they’re out there keeping the community safe.

We are incredibly proud of how these units turned out and even more proud to support the first responders in Thurston County. Next time you see one of these units on the road, give them a wave—you won’t be able to miss them!
